What to Sell at Pawn Shops Ideal Jewelry and Loan

Most people think of a pawn shop as somewhere to sell things. Fewer think of it as somewhere to buy, which is why the buying side is often where the better value sits. Stock is bought locally, priced against what it is actually worth rather than against a retail list price, and it turns over constantly.

Here is what is genuinely worth buying at a pawn shop, what to check before you do, and where to be careful.

1. Gold and Diamond Jewelry

This is the strongest category by some distance. A gold chain, a diamond ring or a pair of earrings bought pre-owned skips the retail markup entirely, and gold does not wear out.

What to check: ask for the karat stamp (10K, 14K, 18K) and the weight in grams. For a diamond, ask whether it has a certificate, and if not, ask what the stone was assessed as. A reputable shop will tell you plainly.

At Ideal Jewelry and Loan every piece is evaluated in store before it goes out, and we are a licensed precious metal buyer in the City of Brockton.

2. Luxury Watches

A pre-owned Rolex, Omega or Tudor from a dealer who authenticates properly is one of the better value purchases available, because the depreciation has already happened.

What to check: ask whether the box and papers are included, whether the movement has been inspected, and what service history is known. A shop that handles watches regularly will have opened it.

3. Electronics

Phones, laptops, tablets and consoles turn over quickly and are priced well below new.

What to check: confirm the device powers on, is fully reset, and is not locked to a previous owner’s account. Ask whether the charger is included. On a phone, ask if it is carrier unlocked. These are reasonable questions and any decent shop expects them.

4. Tools

The quietly underrated category. Good tools are built to last, hold value well, and are expensive new. A pawn shop is one of the few places a working tradesperson can replace a drill or a saw the same day without paying retail.

What to check: power it on, listen to it run, and check for a battery and charger on cordless items, since replacement batteries can cost nearly as much as the tool.

5. Musical Instruments

Guitars, brass, and drums appear regularly, and instruments are one of the categories where buying used is normal even at full retail prices.

What to check: on a guitar, look down the neck for straightness and check the frets for wear. On anything with keys or valves, play it. Ask whether a case is included.

6. Coins, Bullion and Collectibles

Silver and gold coins, rounds and bars come through steadily, and so do collectible pieces that never reach a general retailer.

What to check: for bullion, ask the weight and purity, and understand you are buying close to metal value. For collectible coins, ask whether they are graded.

How to Buy Well at a Pawn Shop

  • Ask how the price was set. On gold and bullion there is an objective answer involving weight and spot price. A shop that can explain it is a shop worth buying from
  • Inspect it in front of them. Power it on, try it on, look closely. This is expected, not rude
  • Ask what is included before agreeing. Chargers, cases, links, boxes and papers all carry value
  • Ask about the return policy and get the answer before you pay. Policies vary between shops and pre-owned goods are not always returnable
  • Come back. Stock changes constantly. The thing you are looking for may simply not be in today

A Note on Where the Stock Comes From

People occasionally ask whether pawn shop inventory is legitimate. In Massachusetts, licensed pawnbrokers operate under strict regulation: photo ID is required on every transaction, items are recorded and reported, and there are mandatory holding periods before anything can be resold.

That regulation is the reason a licensed shop is a safer place to buy pre-owned goods than a classified ad or a meeting in a car park.
